Most likely causes
- Worn or torn door gasket. Humid Dallas air gets pulled in every time the compressor runs.
- Door not closing fully. Overloaded bins, a tilted unit, or a sagging hinge.
- Defrost heater, thermostat, or timer failure (frost-free models).
- Frequent door opening in a hot garage.
- Manual-defrost chest freezer that simply needs defrosting. That's normal, not a fault.
Try this before you book
- Close the door on a dollar bill in several spots. If it slides out easily, the gasket isn't sealing there.
- Clean the gasket with warm soapy water. Dirt and sticky residue stop it from sealing.
- Check that the freezer tilts slightly back so the door swings shut on its own.
- Look at where the frost is. Shelves and food points to the gasket. The back panel points to defrost.
Parts we replace most often
- Door gasket
- Hinge adjustment or replacement
- Defrost heater
- Defrost thermostat or timer
Fix it or replace it?
Gaskets and defrost parts are worth repairing on nearly any freezer. Chest freezers in particular are simple machines that often run 20 years. Replacement only makes sense if the sealed system fails on an older upright or the cabinet itself is rusting through.
From John's notes: Frost isn't just an annoyance. Once it insulates the coil, the compressor runs nearly nonstop, and that's how a simple gasket problem turns into a much bigger bill.
