How to tell heat from a real fault
- Warm only in summer, fine in winter: ambient temperature limit.
- Warm year-round: mechanical issue, such as coils, fans, defrost, or the sealed system.
- Freezer thawing in winter: some fridges stop running when the garage gets too cold, because the thermostat sits in the fresh-food side.
Most likely causes
- Ambient heat above the unit's rated range.
- Dusty condenser coils. Garages are dusty, and heat makes it worse.
- Blocked airflow from storage packed around the fridge.
- Weak condenser fan that can't keep up in extreme heat.
- Worn door seal from years of garage temperature swings.
Try this before you book
- Clean the condenser coils thoroughly.
- Leave at least a few inches of open space around the back and sides.
- Check the manual for the unit's ambient operating range.
- Keep it out of direct afternoon sun from the garage door.
What the repair usually involves
- Coil cleaning and inspection
- Condenser fan motor
- Door gasket
Fix it or replace it?
If the fridge has a real mechanical fault, repair it like any other. If it's simply outside its design range, no repair will make it reliable in August. A garage-ready model, insulating the garage, or moving the unit is the real fix.
From John's notes: Ask yourself one question before calling: did this only start when the heat set in? If the answer is yes, tell us when you book. It changes what we check first and can save you a repair you don't need.
