Most likely causes
- Moisture from a boil-over or cleaning shorting the spark circuit.
- Misaligned burner cap stopping the flame from sensing properly.
- Food debris clogging the burner ports or igniter.
- Faulty spark switch behind one knob.
- Failed spark module (all burners clicking at once).
Try this before you book
- Turn all knobs off and unplug the range, or switch off its breaker.
- Remove the burner caps and grates. Let everything dry completely, ideally overnight.
- Clean burner ports with a straightened paper clip, never a wooden toothpick that can break off.
- Reseat the caps so they sit flat and centered.
Safety: If you smell gas with the burners off, don't flip switches. Leave the home and call your gas utility from outside.
What the repair usually involves
- Cleaning and drying service
- Spark switch
- Spark module
- Igniter electrode
Fix it or replace it?
Clicking problems are inexpensive repairs on any gas range. A worn switch or module is never a reason to replace an otherwise working stove.
From John's notes: The most common cause I see is a pot boiling over or a heavy wipe-down with spray cleaner. Give it a full day to dry before calling. The clicking often stops on its own.
