Most common Whirlpool dryer problems
- Won't start: thermal fuse (on many models it cuts power to the motor), door switch, or start switch.
- No heat: heating element, thermal cutoff, or high-limit thermostat.
- Squealing or thumping: drum rollers and idler pulley.
- Drum doesn't turn but motor hums: broken belt.
- Takes too long: clogged vent or moisture sensor.
Try this before you book
- Check the breaker and make sure the door closes firmly with an audible click.
- Clean the lint screen and confirm strong airflow at the outside vent.
- Listen when you press start. A hum means the motor has power. Silence points to a fuse or switch.

Fix it or replace it?
Whirlpool-built dryers are among the most repairable on the market. Parts are inexpensive and the designs have been refined for decades. Repair makes sense on almost any unit in decent condition, often even past 12 years.
From John's notes: On many Whirlpool-built electric dryers, a blown thermal fuse means the dryer won't start at all, not just won't heat. People assume a dead motor and shop for a new dryer when the fix is a small, inexpensive part.
