Air Conditioner Won't Turn On: Checklist

A dead AC is most often power, the thermostat, or a tripped safety. Run this checklist before calling out.

Before assuming a compressor failure, rule out the common reasons an AC simply will not start.

Check Power and Breakers

AC units trip breakers and GFCI outlets, especially after a surge.

Fix: Reset the breaker and test the outlet; window units have their own reset button.

Verify the Thermostat

A thermostat set wrong or with dead batteries will not call for cooling.

Fix: Set it to cool, below room temperature, and replace the batteries.

Reset After a Power Cut

Many units have a built-in delay to protect the compressor.

Fix: Wait five minutes after restoring power before expecting it to start.
