Refrigerators are never silent, but a new or loud noise is worth diagnosing by where it comes from and what it sounds like.

Grinding or Squealing From the Freezer

This usually means the evaporator fan motor is failing or its blade is hitting ice.

Fix: The fan motor is a common, replaceable part.

A loud hum often comes from the condenser fan or a struggling compressor.

Fix: Clean the condenser fan area; if the hum persists with clicking, have the compressor relay checked.

Loose drip pans, coiled tubing, or an unlevel cabinet vibrate against the floor.

Fix: Level the fridge and secure any loose components.
