Cloudy Glasses From the Dishwasher: Hard Water or Etching?

A white film usually wipes off (hard water); permanent cloudiness (etching) does not. The fix depends on which you have.

There are two very different causes of cloudy glassware, and the test is simple.

Test Which One It Is

Soak a cloudy glass in white vinegar for five minutes.

Fix: If the film clears, it is hard-water deposits; if it stays, it is permanent etching.

Fix Hard-Water Film

Minerals in Dallas water leave a chalky residue.

Fix: Add a rinse aid, use a water-softening additive, and avoid over-dosing detergent.

Prevent Etching

Etching is caused by too much detergent, very soft water, and high heat together.

Fix: Reduce detergent, skip pre-rinsing, and use a gentler cycle for glassware.
